The Age of Learning 🦄 newsletter is for you if you want to build a life you enjoy. Always remember that!
It’s almost impossible to build a life you enjoy without learning. Very often, building a life we want and enjoy requires us to grow, stretch and leave our comfort zone. I think it would be true if I said it’s impossible to grow without leaving your comfort zone.
Leaving your comfort zone means you leave things you understand and you’re used to walk on paths that are new to you. Whenever you are out of your comfort zone learning is inevitable.
Let’s do a little learning survey. Please take out the time to help me take this survey about learning - click here. You’re the best!
Self-learning
Self-learning is often described as a modern way of learning and can be more convenient but we face a roadblock when we try to decide if self-learning is more effective than the traditional system of learning where a course instructor guides you through the process and uses assessments to drive understanding and retention.
According to Creately, self-learning is an approach to learning where the individual makes the effort to identify their own learning needs, set learning goals, find the necessary resources, and evaluate their own knowledge.
Self-learning roadmap
Here’s a simple self-learning roadmap to help you.
Decide what you want to learn — Remember to be explorative, bold and unafraid when you do this. Don’t limit it to what you think you are capable of, allow yourself to dream. You can use the learning planner I created to help you with this.
Find resources online you will like to learn with — Don’t get stuck at this point and refuse to use too many resources to learn the same thing. You can use free or paid resources. Free resources can be limited and paid courses tend to be more structured. YouTube can always be your first choice but move from that point to more structured resources on learning platforms or apps.
We often skip this, but evaluate your potential data cost — There’s no such thing as free learning. You spend data even for free courses and time is also a currency. How much data will this cost you and how much can you afford? How can you possibly manage your data consumption? Would you limit data usage for other apps so you can have more to watch educational videos? Self-learning is usually online so you’ll need to evaluate this.
Decide on your learning schedule - It’s simple, set a tangible learning goal. How many times a week do you want to take your courses and by what time? Make it clear.
Project-based learning — With self-learning, there’s a focus on improvement and unlike traditional learning in self-learning improvement is not measured by test results. This can get tricky but if you focus on always doing projects it gives you an edge over traditional learning because you get to sharpen your skills by using it.
Finally, Learn in public — It’s a scary thing to do because no one wants to be seen as someone who started something and stopped halfway. If you are serious about learning, don’t be afraid to go public and allow that to serve as an accountability bonus for you. It works! It also opens you to opportunities.
Progress so far 🦄
Last week was… but we move.
🦄 As you do practice projects, don’t get stuck there. Go back to theories.
